BIM Survey Closed!

The ACA and Australian Institute of Architects’ National BIM Capability Survey has closed and the results will be finalised soon.

We would like to thank the members who participated in this National Survey as it will help us to understand current capabilities and what information and training will be required to ensure practices remain at the forefront.

Need CPD points by 31 March?

Howard Smith Wharves Site Visit

A review by Theresa Gallina, Senior Account Manager, Interface Aust Pty Ltd

A vibrant new development has changed the face of Brisbane’s waterfront.

Well, I must have been under a rock for the last few years, because the face of Brisbane’s’ waterfront has changed yet again – right under our noses. Or more accurately right under the Story Bridge.

I attended the ACA’s Howard Smith Wharves site visit on Tuesday, 19 February. Both Woods Bagot’s John Flynn and Hutchinson Builder’s Timothy Ferguson shared their insights, experiences, challenges and rewards on this new development.

We meandered along the Brisbane waterfront on a balmy summer afternoon. The views of the Brisbane waterfront are spectacular, with a backdrop of amazing sky-high cliff faces.

The buildings have been re-engineered using recycled timber products and existing materials. The overall aesthetic was fantastic. In a number of cases, I could not distinguish new from old. The empathy for mixing old and new is outstanding.

Our group also had a sneak peak inside Brisbane’s newest Art Series Hotel, and the rooms are gorgeous.  It’s not often you get to see inside a public building before the general public do, so thanks ACA.

Our final stop was Felons Brewery. A welcome final destination where we enjoyed boutique beers, rustic style food and great company.

This tour of Howard Smith Wharves reminded me to stop and appreciate the amazing influence architects have and how beautiful our cities are. ‘Build the building and they will come’ is true in this instance. The waterfront development has attracted visitors and locals. The waterfront is abuzz with activity.

While it is sometimes difficult to plan activities like these and fit them into your busy schedules, you won’t regret doing it.
