The Architecture of Emergency

31 October 2019

The ACA – WA committee is proud to support a public forum organised by the WA chapter of Architects Declare that will debate how we as a profession might tackle the climate and ecological emergency.

Since Architects Declare launched in Australia in July 2019, 660 Australian architecture practices have become signatories, joining a growing number of governments, professional bodies and businesses around the world in declaring a Climate Emergency.

On 26 November, Architects Declare WA will host a public forum – open to signatories and all architecture professionals – to ask how we as a profession will tackle the climate and ecological emergency.

Panellists include former ACA National and State President Kieran Wong and current WA Committee member Kukame McPierzie.

Questions tackled by the panel include:

  • What is the architect’s role in reshaping design culture – and community expectations and demands – in the face of environmental planetary limits?
  • What targets do we need to establish to ensure a safe, liveable and resilient built environment in a changing climate?
  • How can we collectively develop the tools and knowledge we need to reform the design and construction of buildings, and educate clients and users?
  • How might we galvanise the public imagination, popular support and political leadership, to build the net-zero carbon buildings of the future, and upgrade existing stock to these new standards?

Together, the panel will tackle these thorny questions in a facilitated discussion, as we seek to understand and define how we might reposition architecture, and turn threats into opportunities to create a better world.

Architects Declare WA invites all architects – registered and non, signatories and those yet-to sign – to join them and contribute their knowledge, experience and voice to this important movement.
