Juggling Home & Work

27 February 2020

Join the ACA online for a lively discussion about juggling home and work, practice and parenting with architects Melonie Bayl-Smith and Michael Lewarne. Book now for 7 April!

Our speakers will share their experiences of multi-tasking in their daily lives and how they manage to juggle and make it work for them. Topics covered will include bad habits in the profession (including long hours); gender equity and what it means in practice; and fairness in the workplace.

Melonie Bayl-Smith FRAIA

Melonie is Director and Founder of Bijl Architecture and Associate Professor of Architecture at UNSW Faculty of the Built Environment. In 2018, Melonie was the recipient of the Paula Whitman Leadership in Gender Equity Prize. While this award is emblematic of Melonie’s broad and sustained involvement in architecture, equally it represents her practice ethos and ongoing work to change the ‘bad habits’ of the profession which undoubtedly affect all participants, men and women. Of course, Melonie’s own family (one husband, two children, one cat) would all claim she has a few bad habits of her own… so in the interests of transparency, Melonie is embracing an ‘access all areas’ approach for this talk!

Michael Lewarne

Michael is an architect and coach enjoying the challenges of a multiplicity of creative endeavours. He’s involved in changing the recognition and development of design culture, nurturing leadership at all levels. Forging this change, through the work he does as a Director at Redshift Architecture and Art, by Founding Ed Shift, in his role as the Vice-President of the Association of Consulting Architects (NSW/ACT branch) and coaching in Seth Godin’s altMBA
