Living Architecture with Lindsay and Kerry Clare

2 September 2021

On Wednesday 8 September, the QLD/NT branch will run the first in a Q&A series with prominent architects, this time with Lindsay and Kerry Clare. Don’t miss it. Book now!

The ACA’s inaugural event will feature Lindsay and Kerry Clare of Clare Design, an award-winning husband and wife architectural team – collaborating to produce outstanding buildings.

“Our practice is centred around People, Environment and Perseverance.”

During the session, Lindsay and Kerry will share their 40+ year journey in architecture since establishing Clare Design and their key insights with other architects, graduates and students.

“…aesthetic and functional imperatives operate symbiotically throughout the Clares’ work. Simplicity and clarity are their design hallmarks. Their method is pragmatic, and their objective is economy of effort, materials, resources. But this is the economy of perfectionists: everything to be touched required careful detailing. . .But it is quite clear that the Clares are practising a type of modernism which is very sophisticated. . .Also strongly evident in their work are ideas about a natural way of building and using natural techniques for dealing with climate, which also serves to draw the building user into a direct engagement with the place. This is an architecture of critical regionalism.”—Haig Beck + Jackie Cooper, UME, 4 March 1997

Clare Design was established on the Sunshine Coast in 1979. After close to 20 years of successful practice Lindsay and Kerry were invited by the NSW Government Architect, Chris Johnson, to undertake the inaugural role of GAO Design Directors. In 1998 Clare Design moved to Sydney and the NSW GAO became its sole client for the next two years. Lindsay and Kerry led the design of many projects including the No. 1 Fire Station, the upgrade of Circular Quay Ferry Wharves, the Overseas Passenger Terminal upgrade and the National Environment Centre on the TAFE Thurgoona campus.

In 2000 Lindsay and Kerry became the founding directors of Architectus Sydney, serving as Design Directors from 2000–2010. During this period, they produced notable projects including the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, the University of the Sunshine Coast Chancellery, the UNSW Village housing project and Wesley House in Brisbane.

Since 2010 Clare Design has continued to work from Sydney, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast on selected projects across Australia’s eastern seaboard including Docklands Library and Fitzroy Gardens Depot Workshop with the City of Melbourne, the Rockhampton Museum of Art and selected residential projects. Larger projects are done in collaboration with selected architectural firms.

Alongside practice Kerry + Lindsay taught at the University of Newcastle as Professors of Practice 2011–2019 and continue their roles in teaching as Visiting Professors at the Abedian School of Architecture, Bond University.
