May News from ACA - SA

John Held , 12 May 2015

ACA – SA President John Held provides an update for May 2015.

Roundtable – state of the profession in SA

Our first roundtable this year was held in April at Brown Falconer’s office.  A large group contributed ideas on the structure and progress of our research grant awarded by the Architectural Practice Board of SA on the changing state of the architectural profession in SA. Justine Clark, who will undertake much of the work, was present. We have also met with the Registrar of the Practice Board, Sue Millbank.  Once initial data analysis has been undertaken we hope to undertake a comprehensive survey of architects and related interest groups later in the year to understand the changes in the profession. Thanks to Programmed for sponsoring this event.

Subconsultant Agreement

SA hosted a national lunchtime webinar on Wednesday 6 May, which was broadcast to over 20 locations around Australia. Speakers were Steve Lewis from Minter Ellison and Cos Cirocco from Planned Cover. The new subconsultant agreements, developed by Simon Thomson of the SA branch with Minter Ellison and with sponsorship from Minters and Planned Cover, are now available to members from the ACA website.

DPTI Procurement

The reorganisation of DPTI has meant it has been difficult to consult closely using the normal channels of communication. ACA – SA president John Held and Australian Institute of Architects president David Homburg met with Paul Gelston, Chief Operations Officer of DPTI, Luigi Rossi, General Manager Project Delivery and Graeme Brown, General Manager Asset services to get a better understanding of how buildings procurement will be affected by the changes. As a result of that meeting

a)     The Construction Professionals Forum will be reconvened to work through the agenda items previously noted as important by ACA members

b)     The Construction Industry Forum’s DPTI BIM Taskforce (with representation from ACA, Consult Australia, MBA, BuildingSMART, NECA and AMCA)will reconvene to try to recapture the momentum which was building at the end of last year for a logical implementation of BIM in government projects.

David Kilpatrick has also agreed to coordinate a group looking at improving the prequalification process and documentation – please contact him at d@kilpatrick.net.au

BuildSA – BIM

BuildSA commenced last month with a well-attended seminar at Adelaide University. The next event is on Tues 16 June  and it will run throughout 2015 with a focus on bridging the gap between what BIM promises and how it is actually delivered on projects in South Australia. It will concentrate on collaboration rather than specific software and is for all sectors of the industry. For further information see http://build-sa.com.au/

Trade Mission to China

The Australian Institute of Architects and ACA have been part of a group involved in discussions leading up to a Design Sector trade mission to China at the end of May. David Homburg is representing architects on the trip – we wish him the best.

MBA Tendering Guidelines

We have commenced discussion with the MBA on the tendering guidelines, last updated in April 2004. We believe it needs updating, especially when many tender documents are issued electronically. Anyone who would be keen to help with this task should contact Graham Hardy graham@hardymilazzo.com.au
