NSW Land and Environment Court: Special Presentation
Learn more about the NSW Land and Environment Court and its relevance to architects when the ACA – NSW/ACT presents Tim Horton and Chris Shaw at Club Rose Bay on 1 May.
Our speakers will cover the following topics:
- The value of understanding the remit and structure of the Court – its objects, the LEC Act and parts of the EPA Act and Regs
- Resolution through conciliation and the role architects can play in arriving at alternatives
- Obligations of architects in preparing documents on which the Court relies
- Thoughts on Good Design in the Act, policy and environmental planning instruments, with reference to the Court’s Planning principles

Speakers
Tim Horton was appointed a Commissioner of the Land and Environment Court in November 2018. An awarded architect and life-long observer of politics, Tim got his chance to bring his interest in policy and design together when, at the age of 36, he was appointed by the South Australian Premier to advise on design, planning and development. He has served as the Registrar of the NSW Architects Registration Board, Chapter President of the Australian Institute of Architects, Chair of the National Practice Committee of the Institute, member of the Australian Government’s Built Environment Industry Innovation Council and member of the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network Management Board.
Chris Shaw is the Principal of Shaw Reynolds Lawyers. He is recognised as a leading expert in planning, local government and environmental law. He has provided representation on projects in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia, with clients including local and state government bodies, corporations and individuals. He regularly appears in the NSW Land and Environment Court, the Supreme Court of NSW and regularly lectures on local government planning and environmental law.
