On Presenteeism

29 April 2023

We are delighted to announce the return of Stepping Up for 2023. Join the ACA, Parlour and the Champions of Change Architecture Group for excellent online CPD events and editorial content on practical approaches to improve equity in architecture and built environment practices.

We start this year’s series with Stepping Up on Presenteeism – join us for an invigorating conversation with John Prentice of Woods Bagot, Lynne Hancock of DesignInc and Lee Hillam of Dunn & Hillam.

BOOK NOW!

Always available, long hours, presenteeism – these habits, cultures and expectations are deeply entrenched in many architecture practices, and in the discipline as a whole. How do we work effectively and creatively? How can we maintain a commitment to high quality design and ensure that time spent at the desk is productive? What does it mean to challenge the expectations of excessive hours and unstated assumptions while valuing the efforts of highly engaged practitioners? Where do we do our best work, and under what circumstances? (It’s not always the same place!)

The Champions of Change Architecture Group argues that the first step is to have honest and open conversations within the studio, and more broadly. To this end, the group is developing a ‘talking toolkit’ to help facilitate and support conversation. Come along to hear John Prentice and Lynne Hancock discuss this work and its motivations, and Lee Hillam’s response and reflections on her own efforts to think about productivity, commitment and hours in small practice. Get started by reading Lee’s 2017 essay “Go Hard or Go Home”.
