SydBuild Expo 2025
ACA NSW/ACT Committee member David Springett recently joined a panel at the SydBuild Expo at ICC Darling Harbour, where the focus was on supporting and empowering the next generation of Australian architects. Here, David shares his reflections.
The ACA NSW/ACT was part of a Panel titled ‘Bridging the Gap’, at the SydBuild Expo on 7–8 May 2025, held at ICC Darling Harbour in Sydney. After the disruptions of the last five years, it was a pleasure to see the crowds of professionals and hundreds of stalls and presentations at ICC Darling Harbour.
The ACA shared the stage at the Architecture and Design Network Hub with Tim Lee for the Regional Architects Association (RAA); and Dr. Kirsten Orr, Registrar NSW Architects Registration Board (NSW ARB). ACA NSW/ACT Executive Officer Marie Frost and ACA National Partnerships Manager Katherine Ygosse were also in attendance.
The topic was “Bridging the Skills Gap”. Tim (RAA) focused on the Regional Architects Association, their upcoming VITAL conference, and how the association supports new architects in regional areas. He also took us through the opportunities in the regions. Kirsten (NSW ARB) talked about formal study at university and registration, and discussed alternative pathways to becoming a registered architect in NSW.
Representing the ACA NSW/ACT, I spoke about the business aspects of architectural practice. This included the challenges posed by the NSW Design & Building Practitioners Act and the requirements for designer registration for certain classes of building. I also highlighted the upcoming legislative changes under the proposed Building Bill, with the Architects Act being relocated under the new Bill, and outlined the ACA’s ongoing advocacy and submissions to the NSW Government.
The panel discussion concluded with questions from the audience, with topics ranging from the NSW Planning Portal, to recognition of overseas experience, and work experience. The Panel was enlivened by a graphic artist, Elise from the SydBuild Expo team, creating cartoons and highlighting key points while we spoke.
The large audience enjoyed the drinks and lunch provided by the RAA.
