Cost Planning & Negotiation

30 September 2020

Listen in to our expert speakers giving an introduction into the complexities of Cost Planning and Negotiation and the crucial role these sometimes overlooked skills can play for the success of your practice.

This CPD webinar was held on 21 October 2020 and is now available for PURCHASE ON DEMAND.

Cost planning and negotiating are key skills in the architectural armoury. It is through cost planning and negotiation that client budget expectations are met. But more importantly, cost planning negotiations are central to managing design and construction risks and achieving quality outcomes. Understanding this area is critical for architects at all scales, levels and experience of practice.

Projects, from the smallest to the largest, are increasingly more complex and specialised. It is often difficult for practitioners to best manage project costs. This special presentation will highlight a range of case studies and feature a discussion between academic Dr Peter Raisbeck and architect Peter Finn to provide direction in the methods and strategies involved in the process of cost planning.

This webinar will serve as an introduction to this large important topic, with the two Peters offering important insights and their characteristic dry humour.

Our Speakers

Peter Finn

Peter describes himself as a ‘survivor’ of small and medium practice, and has worked at a partner level for 30+ years. He has considerable experience in the areas of developing project delivery through client engagement, brief and budgets, consultant management and contract administration.

In recent years, Peter has delivered guest lectures at the MSD architecture school in Professional Practice. Peter’s experience also includes six years as a sessional member with Planning Panels Victoria for the state government, concentrating on heritage matters, rezoning and a wind farm.

Peter is a past director of ArchiTeam, having amongst other things served as director for professional indemnity Insurance including initiating a peer support program to assist architects with potential claims by working to defuse problems through finding a ‘way out’. Peter initiated and writes the ArchiTeam Datum popular monthly column for topical practice issues ‘What could possibly go wrong?’

Dr Peter Raisbeck

Dr Peter Raisbeck is research director of the ACA. He is a senior lecturer in architectural practice and design at the Melbourne School of Design, University of Melbourne. He has had over 20 years of professional experience as an employee and contractor in architecture and project management, along with an MBA in finance (but don’t take that against him). Peter believes that cost planning knowledge aligned with assertive negotiation skills are important elements of practice.

Peter’s book Architecture as a Global System was published by Emerald in late 2019. The book brings together architectural history, theory, design and practice strategy.
