Strengthen technical skills, build better practice
How can practices better support the transition from education into practice? How can they help graduates and emerging architects build technical capability? Join the ACA and Ryan Loveday on 14 October to explore how practices can assist graduates to develop professional experience, technical knowledge, judgement and confidence.
BOOK NOW
Architect and educator Ryan Loveday will examine some of the pressures contributing to the capability gap, including reduced exposure to construction and site delivery, changing procurement models, BIM and tighter project fees. He will then look at practical approaches to training that move graduates beyond software proficiency towards a stronger understanding of materials, building systems, detailing and project delivery.
Using the progression ‘See, Draw, Build, Lead’, the session will consider how structured learning, mentoring and project experience can help emerging architects build the skills needed to document, coordinate and ultimately lead successful project delivery.
Key areas covered will include:
- The gaps in technical and construction knowledge in the transition from university to practice
- The impact of BIM, procurement models and commercial pressures on ongoing learning and documentation quality
- The risk those gaps pose to your firm and the wider industry… and what to do about it!
- Creating structured, progressive learning within practice towards technical understanding and professional judgement
- The role of mentoring, role-modelling, and earned experience ahead of QA and systems
- Articulating a training pathway from knowledge of construction materials, systems and detailing, to leading project delivery
- The changes our industry should be collectively advocating for!

OUR SPEAKER
Ryan Loveday is a director of Fulton Trotter Architects, a mid-size practice specialising in social infrastructure projects – education, seniors, health, and community work.
His expertise is as a nuts-and-bolts technical architect running complex and complicated institutional projects, particularly planning, detailing and problem solving… pragmatic but always thoughtful of the ways good design builds momentum for good communities.
Ryan is a LinkedIn tragic, a classic over-thinker, a regular speaker, uni tutor, early career contributor, a BOAQ Examiner – and, as a side gig, runs short courses for grads called Moss Architectural Learning.
CPD
Completion of this 1 hour webinar and submission of the self-checked assessment task will deliver 1 formal CPD point.
Learning outcomes – Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the technical and construction knowledge gaps that can arise in the transition from university to practice, the risks these gaps can create for practices and project delivery, and practical ways to address them. Participants will also gain ideas for developing more structured training pathways, mentoring and experience within practice to build stronger technical capability, professional judgement and confidence in emerging architects.
AACA NSCA: Practice Management & Professional Conduct – PC 2, PC 16. Detailed Design & Construction Documentation – PC 37, PC 39.
The webinar will include time for Q&A and a CPD assessment task. Certificates will be provided following participation in the full webinar and online submission of answers to CPD questions.
