Strengthening links between practice and education
One of the ACA’s key strategic priorities is university engagement, making sure that the next generation of architects is ready not just to design, but also to run productive and sustainable practices. That’s why earlier this year we launched our University Affiliate Program, a new initiative that connects architecture schools, their staff and students directly with the ACA.
The response so far has been really encouraging. RMIT and the PNG University of Technology came on board as our inaugural partners, and we’re delighted that Monash University has now joined them.
The University Affiliate Program is about bridging the divide between education and practice. For students and staff, it means access to ACA’s business tools, webinars, resources, networking and research – practical insights that complement their academic studies. For our members, it creates opportunities to connect with students, contribute to shaping education, and help build a stronger pipeline of graduates who understand the realities of practice.
Building a more resilient profession
We’ve already seen the benefits of working closely with universities through projects like the ARC-funded research on Architectural work cultures with Monash and RMIT Universities; and the Arch_Manu Research Project on Digital Sustainability with the Universities of NSW, Swinburne and Adelaide. By extending our reach through the University Affiliate Program, we can make sure that important conversations about business skills, workplace culture, digital transformations and professional sustainability are happening from the very start of an architect’s career.
What’s in the program for students?
If an architecture school is part of the University Affiliate Program, their students can access Student Affiliate Membership at a reduced rate of just $29 + GST per year.
Student Affiliate Membership offers access to free and discounted CPD, reduced rates for events and networking, exclusive student resources, and practical tools like the training version of the Time Cost Calculator Guide – all designed to help connect study with real-world practice.
Why the program matters
The University Affiliate Program is about building a more resilient and well-connected profession.
- Students gain early exposure to the business of architecture, and network with potential employers.
- Educators can deepen curriculum with real-world links, workshops and guest talks, reinforcing education that’s informed by practice.
- Practitioners get a say in shaping education, they network with potential employees, and grow stronger relationships with universities.
- The profession benefits from a pipeline of graduates who understand both creative and commercial realities, setting them up for job readiness.
What’s next
The ACA University Engagement Working Group is guiding this effort. With these universities now on board, the program is gaining momentum. Our focus will be on expanding engagement through guest lectures, shared resources, collaborative events and research.
Ultimately, the goal is simple: to build a stronger connection between education and practice, so that students are better prepared and the profession is better supported.
