Vale (Kenneth) Struan Gilfillan OAM

29 November 2020

The ACA sadly advises that founding member of the Association in Melbourne and longtime Chairman of the National Industrial Relations Committee Struan Gilfillan passed away peacefully on 20 October 2020.

Struan was a founding committee member of the Association when it was formed in Melbourne in 1986 and remained on the Victorian Branch committee until his retirement in 2013. During that time he was Chairman of the National Industrial Committee from 1993 as well as Vice President of the Victorian Branch committee from 1995 until his retirement in 2013.

Struan represented the Association in the creation of the initial Award for Architects – The Technical Services Architects Interim Award 1998. Subsequently he again represented the Association in the transition to the Technical Services – Architects – Award 2000. It was Struan’s influence in the drafting of the Award that provided much improved conditions for students of architecture, a sector of the profession that he has always sought opportunities to promote. It was this Award that was subsequently rolled into the current Modern Architects Award in 2010.

Struan also represented the Association on the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) National Practice Committee, providing advice to the Institute on a wide range of practice matters. His work with the AIA also included membership of the Joint Contracts Committee, an organisation responsible for the preparation of building contracts, as well as his role as Senior Counsellor providing advice to architects and clients on matters relating to the practice of architecture.

Struan provided an exemplary level of service to the Association of Consulting Architects in a voluntary capacity over many years that was beneficial to the architectural profession.

Our heartfelt condolences to his family.
