The first in the Architects Mental Wellbeing Forum (AMWF) Toolkit Event Series addresses how the Physical Office Environment can impact wellbeing and productivity. The session features the founder of AMWF UK, Ben Channon, zooming in from London, plus Naomi Stead, leader of the major research project ‘Architectural Work Cultures: professional identity, education and wellbeing’. The webinar also features presentations by three practitioners, who share their experiences of the physical office environment and its impact on wellbeing – Kirby Roper from Kirby Architects, James Dujmovic from JPE and Jock Lovell from Brown Falconer.
Physical Office Environment – access the recording
The second online wellbeing event from the AMWF Toolkit series features an important discussion about how office culture, overtime and long hours can impact wellbeing. Our three speakers discuss policy as well as professional and personal tips on tackling the long hours culture in practice. Speakers include Brian Clohessy from BVN, Jenna Holder from Das Studio, and Candice Knight from Hassell. The event also features Naomi Stead, leader of the major research project ‘Architectural Work Cultures: professional identity, education and wellbeing’, who discusses relevant findings from the wellbeing research; and facilitator and ACA CEO Angelina Pillai.
Culture & Overtime – access the recording
The third online AMWF Toolkit event focuses on Contracts, Clients & Managing Deadlines. Our three guest speakers share their experiences and strategies on contracts, fees and deadlines, and the impact these have on workplace culture and the wellbeing of all within practice. Our panel features three terrific guest speakers from practices of different scales – Cara Phillips from BSPN Architecture, Adam Perrier from Bloc Design and Ben Madden from Cottee Parker Architects – along with AMWF QLD/NT facilitator Justine Ebzery from Fulton Trotter Architects.
Contracts, Clients & Deadlines – access the recording
The fourth AMWF Toolkit session covers Support Systems & Staff Education, and tackles topics such as Employee Assistance Programs, Mental Health First Aid courses, regular one-on-one check-ins, team-building, mindfulness training and mental health champions within practice. This CPD session features three terrific guest speakers from practices of different scales – Thihoa Gill from Grimshaw Architects, Rebecca Caldwell from Maytree Studios and Simon Frost from Greenway Architects. Each speaker shares their experiences and strategies on wellbeing, support systems and education in practice. AMWF VIC/TAS facilitator Kirby Roper also shares information on the 2023 ACA Trial EAP service and ACA CEO Angelina Pillai facilitates the discussion.
Support Systems & Education – access the recording
Our fifth AMWF Toolkit session features Kukame McPierzie (Woods Bagot), David Gulland (Hassell), Kali Passmore (Gresley Abas) and Lee Yang Yang (eMAGN). They provide invaluable advice for practice owners and managers about the care of students, graduates and interns in practice. Byron Kinnaird also shared the Wellbeing of Architects research on students and wellbeing, and John Doyle (RMIT and the AASA) offers the university perspective.
Students, Grads & Interns – access the recording
Technology helps with speed and efficiency, but it can also create increased stress and information overload. This CPD session covers the extremely timely topic of Technology and its connection to mental wellbeing. Watch this webinar to hear advice from our panel of practitioners and HR experts on making the most of technology without becoming a slave to it. In this recording, Brian Clohessy (Head of People & Character, BVN), Jean Graham (Director, Winter Architecture) and Merilyn Speiser (Director, Catalina Consultants) bring their wealth of experience and knowledge to the panel discussion. Topics include the right to disconnect legislation, how to use technology effectively in practice, how to structure meetings for best effect, and how to manage remote working.

Our final event in the AMWF toolkit series tackled two important topics – promoting a healthy workplace and championing an active mindful approach. This CPD webinar features practical, engaging presentations from our panellists – Loren Willis (People & Culture Coordinator, i2C), Rob Henry (Director, Studio Heim), Michael Gay (Senior Associate, Woods Bagot) and Michael Lewarne (unmeasured coach and ACA NSW/ACT Committee member). Each speaker generously brought their wealth of experience and knowledge to the AMWF discussion, sharing their stories and strategies around wellbeing initiatives in practice and prioritising exercise and group activities. An excellent webinar to conclude the AMWF Toolkit series and well worth watching for its timely reminders and excellent advice.
