The evolving role of AI in practice

Artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving from a novelty to a tool that will reshape how practices research, document, evaluate and deliver projects. Join architect and AI agent developer Michael Smith on 19 May, for practical ways to use AI to support your practice now, and implications for architectural work in the future.

BOOK NOW

In this insightful webinar, Michael will explore how AI is already supporting architectural knowledge work, including research, product discovery, NCC navigation, specification support and risk identification. He will look at practical ways architects can use AI to improve access to information without losing sight of professional judgement, accountability and care.

The session will include an introduction to Spec Rep Help Desk, a free AI platform designed to support Australian architects and specifiers. Michael will explain what it is, how it works, where it can assist practice, and how architects can use it for product research, compliance context, sustainability information, risk checks and supplier support.

As the developer of the recently launched ACA member AI Business Concierge, Michael will also explain how this system works and benefits of using the tool when searching for reliable business and employer obligation information.

The discussion will then broaden to consider the wider challenges facing the profession. As AI begins to influence briefing, design imagery, documentation, research, fee models and client expectations, architects will need to reconsider where their value lies, how responsibility is maintained, and how the public interest is protected in an era of increasingly automated production.

This session is intended for architects, practice leaders and team members who want a practical understanding of what AI can do now, and a clearer view of what may be coming next.

OUR SPEAKER

Michael Smith is an architect, writer, advocate and founder working at the intersection of design, technology, and public life. As Co-Founder of Andever, his architectural practice explores how innovation and craft can coexist – designing thoughtful, human-centred spaces while engaging deeply with the systems that shape the built environment. Michael is also the Founder of Spec Rep Help Desk, a platform transforming how architects discover and specify building products through artificial intelligence and verified data. In parallel, he serves as Consulting Architect for Built Environment Channel, helping connect architects and product manufacturers through meaningful digital engagement. Beyond practice, Michael has been recognised twice as an AIA Bates Smart Award winner for Architecture in the Media and has written for Domain and The Age on the role of design in contemporary Australian life. Michael’s ongoing focus is the integration of architecture, digital media and artificial intelligence – exploring how emerging technologies can enhance creativity, transparency and equity in the way we design and build.
