Inside Stratco – steel, innovation and design
The ACA QLD/NT committee recently co-hosted a CPD event in collaboration with Stratco Architectural Solutions, offering members the opportunity to explore emerging techniques in steel design and fabrication.
The CPD presentation and factory tour was led by Cindy Lee, Architectural and Specifications Representative (and a former practising architect) and Andrew MacDonald, Queensland Sales Manager. The session combined technical insights with a guided factory tour and an in-depth look at the creative potential of curved steel cladding and roofing.
The presentation and tour highlighted the evolution of roll forming technology with improved techniques and increased availability of materiality, finish and texture.
Curves Reimagined
Once synonymous with rectilinear construction, steel is now being used to deliver expressive, fluid forms. Advances in mechanical and spring curving have enabled profiles to bend gracefully around building envelopes, reviving interest in softer geometries.
During the CPD presentation and factory tour, attendees were shown the technologies behind mechanically curved metal applications, as well as the craftsmanship involved in producing factory-made Pittsburgh Seam curved flashings. These demonstrations highlighted the evolving capabilities of steel in architectural design.
Projects such as Josiah College by HHH Architects illustrate how these techniques are reintroducing character and contrast to roofscapes. Modern profiles can be sprung curved to follow gentle arcs or pre-curved in the factory to achieve tighter radii, opening new pathways for architectural expression.
Customisation
The days of one-size-fits-all are over. Stratco understands that every project is unique and has very different requirements. If you need specific panel widths or want to explore Colorbond’s Design Studio range of 200 colours, Stratco Architectural Solutions are ready to help bring your vision to life. Need something completely original? Contact Stratco to find out more about their custom fabrication capabilities.
This CPD event offered a valuable blend of theory, demonstration and dialogue. ACA members left with renewed inspiration and practical knowledge about how evolving steel technologies can support bold and responsive design.
