QLD/NT Update – June 2023

28 June 2023

In the last six months, the QLD/NT branch committee have been busy organising interesting and topical online events, providing networking opportunities, site tours and panel discussions, and advocating on the issues that matter to the profession.

HIGHLIGHTS

It’s been a wonderful first six months of 2023 and the QLD/NT branch is proud to have been able to maintain connections with our members and corporate partners through this period. In particular, this has provided us all great insight into understanding the local, regional, national and even global economic impacts we are still experiencing. We’ve got another exciting six months ahead, and we’re looking forward to continuing our work in supporting you all.

CORPORATE PARTNERS

As always, we wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our corporate partners for their ongoing support and expertise. This includes their efforts through their in-house CPD programs that help upskill technical staff while also helping to answer general enquiries.

Thank you!

EVENTS

Up until this month, we have facilitated numerous informative and inspiring events and projects. This has included many webinars, two site tours, and a lunch forum to help bring together our members across Queensland, the Northern Territory and Australia.  After the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been lovely to see everyone back together in person once more. Learn more about some of these events below.

All Hallows’ Site Tour – Potter Building

On 28 February, the QLD/NT branch took members on a site tour of the Potter Building Adaptive Reuse Project, a five-storey redevelopment of the former library at All Hallows’ School. This educational project sits at the heart of a state heritage listed site in Brisbane’s CBD and was designed by Fulton Trotter Architects.

Moss Learning – Gap Filler Course – Member discount

As part of the ACA’s efforts to support our members, we were proud to offer discounted rates for the 12-week intensive Moss Learning Gap Filler Course in March of this year. If you missed out, then fear not, as the course will be on offer again this coming August. For more information, head to the Moss Learning offer.

Contract Administration Webinar

On 16 and 23 March this year, we held two successful webinars on contract administration. With both interactive elements and in-depth discussions, the webinars covered a range of different topics to help build an effective understanding of contracts, negotiations and more. We thank our expert speakers, Dr Harm Hollander (PhD Creative Industries; QUT) and Angela Yates (Partner; Moray & Agnew Lawyers) for their insights.

Construction Cost Inflation – is the end in sight?

Earlier this month, we facilitated an insightful lunch forum on the topic of the times – construction cost inflation and when it will hopefully end! We had the pleasure of welcoming three keynote speakers – Damien Stokes from Stokes Wheeler, Matthew Lee from Costplan and Marcus Brown from Bull + Bear, with David Brian from dwp Architecture moderating the discussion.

JCU Innovation Technological Complex Site Tour

On 22 June, our members and guests had the opportunity to get a sneak peek of the James Cook University Technology Innovation Complex in Townsville! The tour of the complex, designed by the talented teams at Richard Kirk Architects, Charles Wright Architects and i4 Architecture, demonstrated the innovative approaches being implemented in educational spaces in the tropics.

ADVOCACY

The ACA has continued to engage with government at various levels. QLD/NT committee members and ACA National President John Held attended the Australian Construction Industry Forum (ACIF), held in Brisbane in May. Connections were made at a ministerial level for discussions about matters that affect the profession.

The committee is also elevating regional engagement and developing a focused forum to listen and learn about issues affecting architects across Queensland and the Northern Territory. This will greatly assist the committee representing the profession in the geographically wide state and territory.

Ongoing meetings with the Australian Institute of Architects continue to support each organisation’s efforts in advocacy.

APPRECIATION

This past month, David Brian announced that he is stepping down as the Events Committee Member after four years in the position. We would like to thank David for his dedication and commitment to the QLD/NT Committee as a previous Vice-President and Events Coordinator.
